Hi, all.
What are your thoughts about the ElBraille from Freedom Scientific? It's like the Pac Mate line, except for it is on some major drugs, lol. The cellular function is nice, though I am unsure if you can use it to place phone calls. $1700.00 for everything is not a bad price, either. Comments?
$1700 isn't the actual price unless you have both a Focus 14 and Jaws lisence already. The braille commands are a bit different, since I'm not used to the key mapping of the Focus with JAWS, but it works pretty well witha QWERTY keyboard plugged in. I haven't had the chance to play with one extensively, but spent a couple of hours with one. If you're looking for a notetaker that will boot quicly and that will pick up where you left off, this isn't likely for you given the boot time is about 20-25 seconds.
No.
Laughing.
Another hefty device I could never afford doing things my Iphone/Ipad already does.:)
Exactly my point. The new devices really don't add anything special, so if you don't need a new device, why buy one?
Give me something new and exciting, then I'm interested.
Improve the models already available.
Of course, they need to make money, so that's good, but for us that have devices working, well. No.
Laughing.
I am a person who wants a good Braille notetaker on hand at all times. But to me it is important to be able to flick it on and be right where you were in your document, as a sighted person may be when jotting a number down quickly on a piece of scrap paper. So, the ElBraille would not be for me as a previous poster suggested.
I still remember the old Braille Lite 40s from the early 2000s. Long battery life, easy document storage, instant startup and no destractions It had its drawbacks too for sure, but there are days I miss it. I think if I can ever find a way to write and edit documents well on an IOS device, that could replace it, but that hasn't happened yet.
I definitely agree about the old Braille n Speak and Braille Lite. It was just like a sighted person with a piece of scrap paper. In my mind, that is what a notetaker should be. I can say that my Braille Sense U2 Mini fills this role. But I could not quite say the same about the Pac Mate Omni, which disappointed me a bit with its too-frequent crashes.
I'm absolute sad. I still use a slate and stylous for quick notes.
My iPhone has a voice recorder, and even a note taker too, or reminders section.
Both items can be carried in my shoulder bag easy.
I'm really behind on this sort of device, but what I've got gets the same job done.
I have looked at them, but each time I say no.
I feel the same way about a slate and stilus. Keep thinking it might be worth my while to get one, but gosh are they slow to write on.
Yes, I miss the old Braille Lite days. My old Braille Lite 2000 finally bit the dust in 2015. We may be getting closer with braille input in iOS 11, but it's never going to be like a notetaker such as the ones we are talking about here.
I understand.
But, $6 or $6000. The slate and stilus won for me.
Laughing.
I seriously gave these a look though.
The processor in this device isn't even being supported for major windows 10 device updates.
So aside from security updates, don't expect any new features.
please correct me if i'm wrong, but my understanding of ElBraille is a focus blue 14 or 40 braille display plus some window 10 enabled function? which means, is a piece of at least 5 years old equipment, running windows 10... and sell it for 3 to 5 times the price of a computer?
Well, they say it is updated. New name, hopefully some new hardwear, and there you have it.
